This paper examines the definitions of public participation in spatial planning visions proposed by authors elitist, conflictual and multidimensional. Their contributions offer more interpretive frameworks suitable for social research of this problem and show relevant variables such as the role of experts, the origin of the initiatives and socio-political consequences. Offer, in particular theoretical perspectives to analyze the passage of "militant particularism '(Harvey 2001) to a broad conception of urban policy. Point out, this way, the type of dimensions that are argued to be relevant in four approaches (the 'urban movements', the 'dialectical', that of 'empowerment' and 'communicative-critical'), its main differences mutual and alternative conceptions formulated in terms of exercises dimensional collective power, actors and methods involved.
